Ya'll,
What follows is a message I got some time back on the SOFTIMAGE list:
(I am sorry to be off-topic for a second guys)
MICROSOFT ANNOUNCES REPACKAGING AND NEW PRICING ON SOFTIMAGE PRODUCTS
High-End Graphics Tools Now Affordable for Broader Audiences
REDMOND, Wash., Jan. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Microsoft Corporation (Nasdaq: MSFT)
today announced significant price reductions on the company's 3-D animation
software, called SOFTIMAGE(R) 3D; its 2-D cel-animation software, SOFTIMAGE
TOONZ; and its compositing, special-effects and paint software, called
SOFTIMAGE EDDIE(TM). The price reductions are an integral part of
Microsoft's
strategy to make high-end media-creation tools available to broader audiences
in response to demand for content with high production value for the
interactive, film and video markets. Microsoft has taken the first step in
this direction by simplifying the SOFTIMAGE product-line pricing structure
and increasing price/performance through new-feature releases and reduced
pricing.
SOFTIMAGE 3D 2.66 previously was available in a variety of configurations,
with prices ranging from approximately $16,000 to $40,000 (U.S.). SOFTIMAGE
3D 3.0, announced today, will now be sold in two configurations:
SOFTIMAGE 3D,
available for approximately $7,995 (U.S.), SOFTIMAGE 3D Extreme for
approximately $13,995 (U.S.), and SOFTIMAGE 3D Extreme with Eddie for
approximately $19,995 (U.S.). SOFTIMAGE 3D is a full-featured, high-end 3-D
animation product that includes among its many advanced features NURBS and
polygonal modeling, inverse kinematics and dynamic simulations, motion
capture both in and out, and polygon reduction. SOFTIMAGE 3D includes all
data-exchange formats available for SOFTIMAGE and a development environment
for integrating customer-defined special effects. SOFTIMAGE 3D now offers
file import in 3D Studio(R) .3DS format, plus numerous animation and
modeling effects. SOFTIMAGE 3D Extreme includes the SOFTIMAGE 3D package,
plus advanced special effects for modeling and rendering. These
special-effects modules include Meta-Clay for density-based modeling of
organic, sculptured objects; mental ray, a complete and customizable solution
for photorealistic rendering, including optical, volumetric and environmental
special effects; and Particles, for realistic simulation of fountains,
explosions and other special effects using real-world dynamics.
SOFTIMAGE 3D, formerly named Creative Environment(R), has been renamed by
Microsoft to feature the SOFTIMAGE brand name, which is recognized around
the world for high-quality media-creation tools.
"Previously, high-end 3-D animation tools that met industry requirements
were only available at premium prices and with extensive option packages,"
said Andrew Wright, manager of advanced authoring tools at Microsoft. "We
have taken significant steps to make these high- quality tools much more
affordable and accessible by combining the most frequently requested features
into simple configurations."
Well, I hope this helps end the SOFTIMAGE confusion...
We now return you your originally scheduled program :)
